When Ben Franklin penned one of his immortal quips about the trade-off of freedom and security (See Wikiquote for the full story) he had physical freedom and security in mind; however, in this coming election, the citizens of the USA are going to make a choice that may impact their freedom of speech: one for dearest rights secured to us by the Founding Fathers as part of our inalienable rights from the Creator.
In November, once the BHO and SMDC are elected, this warning from Dr. Franklin will be tested as one of the first issues to be taken up will be the "Fairness Doctrine" (See Wikipedia on history of the FD). Both Pelosi, and Senator Reid have said that they will revisit the Fairness Doctrine after the 2008 elections. I am sure they are both hoping for the BHO administration and SMDC installation.
After Jan. 20, 2009, with all parts of the government in tight control of the Democrats, the FCC's new Chairman, a political appointment, will quickly move to reinstate the components of the FD without Congressional action, and when the impotent Republicans raise a ruckus, the SMDC will move to codify the FD into Federal Law.
The legal challenges will begin immediately, but the cases will be hear at the lower levels by very liberal District Judges and then appealed to liberal Appeals Court justices. The only saving force may be a SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) hearing with a 5-4 decision; however, that is very tenuous at best.
This is how freedoms are eroded, like hone: slow and sweet; however, in the end, the string of the caretakers will be felt. We are moving towards the nanny state. How can anyone be against that?
